AbstractThe predominant mechanism of abnormal gas exchange in patients with the adult respiratory distress syndrome is intrapulmonary shunting. However, other abnormalities of cardiopulmonary function may modify the degree of hypoxemia that is seen, and must be considered when interpreting the effect of therapy.
