AbstractAcute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a common reason for admission to hospital. Non-invasive ventilation using bilevel positive airway pressure has an important role in the management of acute hypercapnic (type 2) respiratory failure, particularlywhen pH is < 7.35. This article discusses the indications for its use and care of patients receiving non-invasive ventilation.
