AbstractSurgery is associated with oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is correlated with postoperative myocardial ischaemia. It has been shown that the endogenous hormone melatonin has antioxidant effects. A potential benefit of melatonin has been proven in experimental studies as well as in neonates. Melatonin has not been used in adult patients with acute oxidative stress. A potential beneficial effect of melatonin in patients after surgery is possible and should be investigated in the future.
