AbstractGestational diabetes is a complication of pregnancy associated with an increase in maternal and perinatal morbidity, as well as an increased risk of subsequent type II diabetes. Diagnosis can be made by the O'Sullivan test, followed by an oral glucose tolerance test. Management of women with gestational diabetes involves multidisciplinary collaboration. The treatment includes diet and, if necessary, insulin therapy. Until recently, there was no evidence that this approach is beneficial. This year, the results of a randomised trial showed a reduction of perinatal mortality and morbidity associated with management of gestational diabetes.
