AbstractAll patients with pain who are admitted to hospitals in Denmark must be assessed for levels of pain. However, it is not certain how pain should be measured. One way to measure pain is to use a visual analogue scale (VAS). This article focuses on how the VAS should be used in clinical practice in the assessment of post-operative pain. Furthermore, other suitable methods are compared with VAS. VAS is particularly useful for clinical research, but for daily clinical practice it may be easier to use a numeric rating scale.
