BackgroundUmbilical herniorraphy is a common paediatric surgery day case. Paraumbilical blocks have previously been reported to provide excellent analgesia for umbilical hernia repairs.MethodsLocal anaesthesia through a paraumbilical block was compared with local infiltration. Postoperative analgesic requirements were used to gauge the effectiveness of the techniques.ResultsPatients receiving a paraumbilical block required significantly less analgesia postoperatively. These patients were generally discharged from hospital sooner.ConclusionParaumbilical block results in improved postoperative pain control through the more precise delivery of local anaesthetic to the intercostal nerves.
