PurposeThe general problem of 'getting past the statistical referee' has been recognised in many journals over a long period of time. The purpose of this article is to help authors in the review process, and to give the journal better statistical credentials.MethodThis is a reflection of 20 years of statistical reviewing for this and other journals, calling on the literature where appropriate.ResultsA number of criteria are listed that any statistician would expect authors to address. The statistician should not expect a statistical masterclass of all of them, but a recognition of the general problems posed.ConclusionsBy using these criteria authors should be better equipped to deal with statistical issues that might arise.
