AbstractTherapeutic hypothermia for comatose patients after cardiac arrest is standard care today. The case report illustrates that therapeutic hypothermia may also be of value in cerebral hypoxia following an attempted suicide by hanging. An 18-year-old haemodynamically stable man with Glasgow Coma Score 4 was treated with mild hypothermia (31-32 degrees C) for 36 h. He recovered completely without cognitive defects. The favourable outcome suggests that therapeutic hypothermia should be considered for other than patients with cerebral hypoxia following cardiac arrest.
