    AbstractThis paper opens a series on protocol-based care by introducing the concept, revisiting its definitions and components, and considering the factors that influence the development of protocols. Part one discusses the aims of integrated care pathways implemented by multidisciplinary teams and reflects on their benefits to patients, staff and organisations.
