AbstractPay for performance--reimbursing providers for the quality rather than the volume of care--seems so logical that it's a wonder it took so long to get here. Initial results of pilot programs indicate incentives do spur improvements. However, the pilots also point up weaknesses that must be resolved if pay for performance is to become the national standard.
