AbstractThe Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 authorized the establishment of a physician quality reporting system which would tie a reimbursement incentive to compliance with benchmarks that are considered proxies of quality patient care. The Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) has called this the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI). A brief historical background about how this program evolved, how one participates in this initiative, and the strengths and weaknesses of current and new benchmarks is presented.
