AbstractDecreasing financial resources in the health care system require effective cost management. For this reason and due to special modalities of reimbursement regulations for open heart procedures, we analyzed the extent of additional costs caused by subsequent deep wound infections requiring surgical revision. The real costs of 12 consecutive cases of sternal infections out of a total of 1,124 open heart procedures in 1996 were assessed and differentiated.
