    AbstractSir Geoffrey Marshall was a remarkable, hard-working man who helped in the development of anaesthesia and respiratory medicine. Both were in someway helped by his military experiences in World War I, first when working on an ambulance barge and then in the Casualty Clearing Stations researching the increasing problem of surgical shock. Among a multitude of high-ranking medical posts he also acted as Physician to King George VI and Sir Winston Churchill when they developed respiratory conditions.
