AbstractDespite the fact that many new exciting prospects are on the horizon, volume support remains the cornerstone of resuscitation of the critically ill surgical patient. Their limitations not withstanding, balanced electrolyte solutions, properly used, are the most efficacious choice in the majority of patients. The patient's eventual survival depends not only on skillful resuscitation but on the ability to identify and correct the underlying cause.
