AbstractHypoxemia is an important issue for those who manage patients with respiratory failure. Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method for monitoring arterial oxygen saturation. Oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry correlated strongly with the percent oxyhemoglobin as measured with a CO-oximeter. Patients with respiratory failure often become hypoxemic when they walk or otherwise move, so pulse oximetry is needed to monitor such patients. However, finger probes are not suitable for long-term monitoring: they interfere with the activities of daily life and are unstable because of finger movement. Smaller and more comfortable devices may be developed in the near future.
