AbstractModern perioperative anesthesia regimen in pediatric anesthesia focus on patient safety, pain reduction and patient comfort. Multimodal analgesia is based on regional/local anesthesia, non opioids and opioids. The use of opioids is traditionally much more restrictive than in adult anesthesia because of mostly unsubstantiated fear of serious side effects. As pain is still undertreated in pediatric anesthesia, opioids should be used generously but well-considered. Requirements for a professional pain service are: knowledge of the physiologic and pharmacokinetic specialities of children, possibility of monitoring (f.e. postanesthetic care unit) and prophylaxis and therapy of side effects.(c) Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart-New York.
