AbstractViral encephalitis secondary to herpes simplex virus type I is thought to be the single most important cause of fatal, sporadic encephalitis in the United States. Magnetic resonance not only improves early diagnosis of herpes encephalitis but also is effective in documenting response to antiviral therapy.
