AbstractThe paper presents mortality in surgical units of a second referral hospital from Galati. During 2003 year there have been recorded 190 deaths, most of them being reported by neurosurgery department (132). Hospital mortality varied from 2.8 deaths per 100 inpatients in neurosurgery to 0 deaths in urology and obstetrics-gynecology department. The surgical procedure with the highest number of deaths has been craniotomy (133). The death risk during operation was very low for most of surgical procedures, medium in the first 24 hours and high after 48 hours.
