AbstractPelvic inflammatory disease continues to take its physical, psychological, and financial tolls. Prompt treatment of symptomatic disease and screening of asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic women for the major causative organism--Chlamydia trachomatis--are the keys to preventing serious sequelae, such as chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.
