AbstractThe first article of four starts by a description of the clinical observation which had urged on the study of the phenomenon of comfort. Then, the background of the research is specified as different French signification's of the English word "comfort". In addition, the pertinence of an approach centred on the person experience and the one of the nurse who gave comfort to him/her are explained. The ontological and epistemological consequence of this choice is described in a large manner. Finally, the goal of the research, the research question and the theoretical pertinence of the phenomenon for nursing end this first part. The second part of this article present a synthesis of the analysis of English and French writings.
