AbstractThis article reports on the implementation of an adapted version of the Manchester triage system (Mackway-Jones et al 1997) in a Dutch hospital to allow trained nurse practitioners to treat patients with minor injuries or illnesses, and to assess, treat and discharge patients autonomously. The project has helped to prevent long waits in emergency departments for patients with less urgent conditions.
