    AbstractBreast awareness is a subject which has raised considerable debate and controversy in the last few years. At all levels, from the Department of Health down through the ranks of health professionals to the female population of Great Britain, the subject continues to be debated. This paper examines the nurse's role in helping women understanding how they can benefit from breast awareness. One in 12 women in Great Britain will develop breast cancer and the issue is one for all women. Basic advice for women in the high-risk categories is essential and screening needs to be encouraged, the author finds.
