    AbstractAcademic general practice in Australia is 21 years old. In coming of age it has had to endure a very obstructed labour into Australian medical schools. Departments of General Practice have changed for the better and are being staffed by a new generation of academics, many of whom may lack historical perspective of the development of academic general practice. This article provides this historical perspective.
