AbstractThis guideline was presented in 2016 due to the need for an up to date evidence-based guidance focusing on patient safety. In addition to safety-related aspects of catheter insertion or removal, organisational issues and structured training concepts were discussed. The guideline was created based on the review of current literature as well as expert opinion. The article summarizes and discusses the most important recommendations and the reader is provided with practical advice for catheter insertion or removal with the intention to improve the safety of the patients.Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.
