AbstractNurses are affected on a personal and professional level by the stories they hear from patients throughout their careers. Nurse educators can help graduate-level nursing students understand how these stories impact their nursing lives by incorporating narrative medicine into graduate nursing curricula. Narrative medicine is "... recognizing, absorbing, interpreting, and being moved by the stories of illness" (Charon, 2006, p. 4). Methods to incorporate narrative medicine into graduate nursing curricula include in-depth text analysis and writing exercises, with opportunities for students to read their work aloud. Narrative medicine's role in nursing must be researched through qualitative and quantitative studies.
