    AbstractMetabolic acidosis is a common occurrence in critically ill patients. Understanding the pathological mechanisms underlying the generation of protons will enable the clinician to quickly recognize these disorders and establish an acceptable treatment strategy. This article presents a logical approach to metabolic acidosis.
