AbstractIn October 2014, the United States will switch from using the ICD-9 coding system to ICD-10. This change will allow for greater specificity in describing medical conditions and the addition of new codes as medical knowledge and technology evolve. The change will be a big one for hospitals and clinics. This article describes what physicians need to know about the new system and what the organizations they work for need to consider when preparing for the change.
