ReviewLung ultrasonography for the diagnosis of neonatal lung disease.
Ultrasound has recently become an important method for diagnostic examination and monitoring of lung disease. Many lung diseases, such as respiratory distress syndrome, transient tachypnea of the newborn, pneumonia, atelectasis and pneumothorax were diagnosed by chest X-ray or CT scan in the past, but can now easily be diagnosed with lung ultrasound. ⋯ It is therefore feasible and convenient to perform at the bedside in a neonatal ward. This review focuses on features of bedside lung ultrasound and diagnosis features of common lung diseases in newborn infants, culminating in suggestions for improving the application of ultrasound in the neonatal field.

The reliability of pulse oximetry in the lower SaO2-ranges has not been fully investigated. We wanted to investigate pulse oximeter performance in a pig model of perinatal asphyxia. ⋯ Pulse oximetry was less reliable at SaO2-values below 60%. Tissue acidosis and reduced peripheral perfusion may have contributed to this. It is unknown whether the difference between SpO2 and SaO2 is clinically relevant.

Retrospective evaluation of pregnancy outcomes in women with familial Mediterranean fever.
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by periodic attacks of fever, aseptic serositis and synovitis. In this study, we investigated maternal and neonatal outcomes in pregnant patients with FMF. ⋯ FMF leads to higher rates of PROM, recurrent miscarriage and preterm deliveries. Colchicine treatment is safe in pregnancy and may lead to a decreased miscarriage rate.
