First trimester maternal serum vitamin D and markers of preeclampsia.
There is evidence that vitamin D deficiency is associated with preeclampsia. The aim of the study was to determine if maternal levels of vitamin D at 1st trimester were related to markers of preeclampsia. ⋯ First trimester maternal serum concentration of vitamin D does not seem to be connected with markers of preeclampsia.

Randomized Controlled TrialUnsynchronized nasal intermittent positive pressure versus nasal continuous positive airway pressure in preterm infants after extubation.
To determine the effect of unsynchronized nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation compared to continuous positive airway pressure in preterm infants after extubation. ⋯ NIPPV (although non-synchronized and delivered by single nasal prong) had a better effect than NCPAP after extubation of preterm infants on mechanical ventilation in respect to reducing the prevalence of post-extubation atelectasis, re-intubation and also death.

Plasma anandamide and related n-acylethanolamide levels are not elevated in pregnancies complicated by hyperemesis gravidarum.
Cannabinoids are effective antiemetics and the "endogenous cannabinoids" (endocannabinoids) are thought to modulate emesis in both humans and animal models. Endocannabinoids, their receptors and their metabolising enzymes are present in peripheral blood and a reduction in blood endocannabinoid concentration has been observed in individuals with excessive nausea and vomiting following parabolic flight manoeuvres. We tested the hypothesis that plasma endocannabinoid levels are similarly perturbed in women with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a condition where the aetiopathogenesis is still unknown, compared to normal pregnant controls. ⋯ These results would suggest that either the circulating endocannabinoids quantified may not be key modulating factors in HG or that the expected endocannabinoid system response to the stress induced by nausea and vomiting of early pregnancy remain unchanged in women with HG.

The reliability of pulse oximetry in the lower SaO2-ranges has not been fully investigated. We wanted to investigate pulse oximeter performance in a pig model of perinatal asphyxia. ⋯ Pulse oximetry was less reliable at SaO2-values below 60%. Tissue acidosis and reduced peripheral perfusion may have contributed to this. It is unknown whether the difference between SpO2 and SaO2 is clinically relevant.

ReviewLung ultrasonography for the diagnosis of neonatal lung disease.
Ultrasound has recently become an important method for diagnostic examination and monitoring of lung disease. Many lung diseases, such as respiratory distress syndrome, transient tachypnea of the newborn, pneumonia, atelectasis and pneumothorax were diagnosed by chest X-ray or CT scan in the past, but can now easily be diagnosed with lung ultrasound. ⋯ It is therefore feasible and convenient to perform at the bedside in a neonatal ward. This review focuses on features of bedside lung ultrasound and diagnosis features of common lung diseases in newborn infants, culminating in suggestions for improving the application of ultrasound in the neonatal field.
