A soluble form of suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) has emerged as a biomarker for acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and non-relapse mortality (NRM). We prospectively monitored sST2 levels during the early phase of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and evaluated the clinical association with transplant-related complications including acute GVHD. ⋯ The early assessment of sST2 after HSCT yielded predictive values for the onset of acute GVHD and other transplant-related complications including VOD and TMA.

Sickle cell disease (SCD), described as a group of inherited blood disorders, affects millions of people throughout the world and is particularly common in the southern part of Turkey. We aimed to determine the relationship between ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) and the dynamic thiol/disulfide balance in SCD. ⋯ Decreased plasma native and total thiol levels and increased IMA levels are related to increased oxidative stress and provide an indirect and quick reflection of the oxidative damage in SCD patients.

Acute traumatic coagulopathy occurs after trauma with impairment of hemostasis and activation of fibrinolysis. Some endogenous substances may play roles in this failure of the coagulation system. Extracellular histone is one such molecule that has recently attracted attention. This study investigated the association between plasma histone-complexed DNA (hcDNA) fragments and coagulation abnormalities in pediatric trauma patients. ⋯ This study indicated that hcDNA levels were increased in pediatric trauma patients and associated with the early phase of coagulopathy. Further studies are needed to clarify the role of hcDNA levels in mortality and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

The Scope of Kidney Affection in Monoclonal Gammopathies at All Levels of Clinical Significance.
Multiple myeloma (MM) is one of the most important clonal malignant plasma cell disorders and renal involvement is associated with poor prognosis. Although there are several reasons for renal impairment in MM, the main cause is the toxic effects of monoclonal proteins. ⋯ Renal lesions in monoclonal gammopathy can be grouped as follows: light chain (cast) nephropathy, acute tubular injury/necrosis, tubulointerstitial nephritis, amyloidosis, monoclonal Ig deposition diseases, immunotactoid glomerulopathy, type I cryoglobulinemia, proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal IgG deposits, C3 glomerulopathy with monoclonal gammopathy, and crystal-storing histiocytosis, considering the previous and new terminology. In this study, renal involvement of monoclonal gammopathies, in terms of previous and new terminology, was reviewed.

The soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is a soluble form of the urokinase plasminogen activator receptor expressed in various immune and cancer cells. The levels of suPAR have been demonstrated to correlate with prognosis in various cancers. This study was intended to investigate serum suPAR levels and their effect on prognosis in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). ⋯ Serum suPAR levels can be used as a prognostic marker in AML.
