Review[Capnometry. Technique and clinical use in anesthesia and emergency medicine].
By capnometry is understood measurement of carbon dioxide in the expiratory air. The concentration can be determined by various forms of spectometry. A new acoustic principle of measurement is more sensitive than the methods hitherto employed. ⋯ In addition, capnometry is a valuable aid in the regulation of mechanical ventilation. Recent investigations suggest that capnometry can be employed to confirm or refute clinical suspicion of pulmonary embolism and that measurement of expired carbon dioxide may be of prognostic value in resuscitation. It has not yet be elucidated whether nasal measurements in patients who are not intubated can provide reliable values.

Case Reports[Metabolic disorders in the treatment of malignant hematologic diseases--the acute tumor lysis syndrome].
The acute tumor-lysis syndrome is a potentially fatal complication which characteristically arises during initial chemotherapy of malignant hematological diseases with large tumor burdens. The syndrome is characterized by hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, hyperuricemia and often acute renal failure. ⋯ The treatment of the fully developed syndrome is hemodialysis. Three cases of TLS which developed during initial chemotherapy of patients with acute lymnphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are presented.

Review Comparative Study Historical Article[Continuous spinal analgesia. A review].
Continuous spinal analgesia is a recognized method of analgesia for surgical interventions which was originally described in 1907. A brief historical review is presented with a description of the current technique. ⋯ A review is presented of the current knowledge about technique, particularly the equipment, analgesic agents, advantages and disadvantages and indications and contraindications. it is concluded that continuous spinal analgesia probably offers certain advantages, particularly cardiovascular stability. However, the lack of randomized comparisons of the various techniques make further clinically controlled investigations necessary to illustrate this.

A case of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NTH) complicated by delirious psychosis in the initial phase is described. A history of alcohol abuse made the diagnostic assessment difficult. Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NTH) should be considered in cases of delirium with dementia and histories of disturbances of gait or incontinence of urine.

Case Reports[Extravasation of cytostatics. Example of a severe complication from the use of long-term central venous catheters].
Completely implantable ports have become increasingly popular for venous access in the treatment of cancer. An uncommon but very serious complication is reported here: extravasation of a cytostatic agent secondary to a damaged Port-a-Cath catheter. Guidelines to be observed in implantation are recommended.
