With the reduction of administrative Regions in Denmark to a total of five, more focus has been given to prehospital services. Since access to and quality of prehospital treatment is not standardized, it may very well vary between regions. ⋯ There is considerable variation in the coverage of the physician-based prehospital units in Denmark. There are sound medical arguments for having a specialist in anaesthesiology staffing physician-based prehospital units. All administrative regions - except Region Nordjylland - offer advanced physician prehospital treatment on a 24-hours basis.

Comparative Study[Prehospital trauma triage before and after deployment of a physician-manned mobile emergency care unit in Nordsjaelland].
Prompt and correct triage to a facility capable of providing optimal care is important for survival and functional outcome after major trauma. This study compared the influence of on-scene deployment of physicians with medical telephone counselling of paramedics on the triage of trauma patients. ⋯ Prehospital, physician-based triage of trauma significantly reduced the need for secondary transfers to tertiary facilities.

Catatonia is seen in various psychiatric disorders, but also rarely occurs in medical conditions with organic cerebral affection. We present a case of a previously mentally healthy male, who developed catatonia years after a stroke in the right hemisphere. ⋯ The condition responded to benzodiazepine and electroconvulsive therapy. Catatonia should be considered as a differential diagnosis when the described symptoms occur in patients with a known organic cerebral disorder.

Danish anaesthesiologists use ultrasound (US) to examine and treat acutely ill or traumatized patients in the emergency room, operating theatre and intensive care unit. They are also involved in pre-hospital care where US may theoretically be beneficial for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The literature concerning the potential use of emergency US in the pre-hospital setting is evaluated. Evidence from both Europe and the USA indicates that pre-hospital US improves diagnosis and visitation of acutely ill or traumatized patients.

Lung sonography is an old technique applied in a new fashion. Applying lung sonography in the examination of an acute patient with pulmonary problems is a novelty in Denmark. ⋯ We introduce the "typical signs" such as lung sliding and artefacts. The rationale for lung ultrasonography in the treatment of acute patients seems obvious when comparing this technique with conventional diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of pulmonary status.
