Providing continuing education to support a change in practice for a busy Emergency Department poses a challenge. Factors such as shift work, high patient acuity, and unpredictable patient flow create barriers to traditional methods of delivery of a comprehensive educational experience. ⋯ The Web-based learning environment proved to be a successful means of providing nurses with a collaborative learning experience around a new practice issue. This experience also highlighted the need for a new skill set for learners and educators using online learning technologies.

An online "issues in nursing" course was developed over the summer 2000 and subsequently implemented over a 4-semester time period in an RN-BSN program. Student and faculty anecdotal evaluation records were compiled and reviewed to determine universal needs and concerns associated with online learning for this particular population. Seven themes emerged from student course evaluation data and 5 "factors for faculty consideration" were identified by the course facilitator.

The effectiveness of an interactive multimedia learning tool on nursing students' math knowledge and self-efficacy.
The use of online learning tutorials to provide instruction in schools of nursing is growing in popularity; however, the outcomes associated with this method of instruction are not well documented. The focus of this experimental study, conducted at 2 universities in northern California, was to determine the effectiveness of an online interactive multimedia-learning tool versus text only, text and images, and multimedia learning explanations on math achievement, math self-efficacy, and student satisfaction. ⋯ Interactive multimedia group students were more satisfied with the method of learning, reported the technique to be enjoyable and more interesting, and provided sufficient feedback. An online interactive multimedia-learning tool is a realistic and creative method of teaching medication dosage calculations.

Screening patients for clinical studies is time-consuming for researchers. Inefficiencies from human-based eligibility screening cause delay in scientific breakthroughs and are costly. We sought to determine the reliability of an automated computer-based real-time eligibility screening tool. ⋯ Sepsis Alert and Diagnostic System serves as a reliable tool for real-time eligibility screening in an intensive care unit setting. Time efficiencies through use of Sepsis Alert and Diagnostic System may translate into cost savings for funding agencies. The concept and methodology deployed in this study are applicable to any facility with electronic medical record capacity, as long as the data within that system are granular enough to support the specific query.

The purpose of this study was to review quantitative studies related to computer-based simulation and healthcare education and determine the effect of simulation on education and learning. A total of 513 references were retrieved, but only 9 quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. ⋯ This review indicates that 75% of the studies showed positive effects of simulation on skill and/or knowledge acquisition. The potential of computer-based simulation as an education augmentation is enormous, but research is needed to determine effective and successful uses of high-fidelity simulations for nursing education.
