Prevalence and associated factors of Plasmodium falciparum and soil transmitted helminth infections among pregnant women in Osun state, Nigeria.
Plasmodium falciparum and soil transmitted helminth (STHs) infection are widespread in sub-Sahara Africa, where co-infection is also common. This study assessed the prevalence of these infections and their risk factors among pregnant women in Osogbo, Nigeria. ⋯ High prevalence of P. falciparum and helminth infections was observed among the pregnant women with primigravidae being the most susceptible to co-infection. There is an urgent need to implement an effective malaria and STHs preventive method for this high risk population.

Molecular surveillance of HCV mono-infection and HCV-HBV co-infection in symptomatic population at Hyderabad, Pakistan.
Pakistan is endemic to hepatitis B and C infections. Alarming rise in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been noticed in some areas of Sindh with an increasing risk for co-infection frequency in this region. ⋯ The study demonstrates a high prevalence of HBV co-infection among active hepatitis C patients of Hyderabad.

Fibrinolytic proteins of normal pregnancy and pre-eclamptic patients in North West Nigeria.
The hypercoagulability of pregnancy is exaggerated in pre-eclamptic state because of endothelial activation with resultant production of some endothelial derived proteins that are said to be inhibitors of fibrinolysis. This study compares these proteins like tPA, PAI-1 and D-dimers in normal pregnant women and the pre-eclamptic women. ⋯ The abnormal levels of PAI-1, D-dimer and tPA imply that they contribute to the exaggerated hypercoagulabilty state in pre-eclampsia thus, measuring their levels can help in the management of the condition.

Thyroid profile and LDH Isoenzymes as prognostic biomarkers for diabetic and/or obese subjects.
This study aimed to evaluate the levels of thyroid hormones and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes in obese and/or diabetic patients. ⋯ LDH isozymes can be used as valuable diagnostic markers for metabolic syndrome. This may help to explore the metabolic changes associated with obesity and diabetes complication and following up the complication of these abnormalities.
