Sense of taste in patients after cochlear implantation-preliminary study.
Taste is the leading sense in how we determine the quality of consumed food. Proper gustatory sensation largely determines the well-being and health of an organism, and this affects their quality of life. ⋯ These findings suggest that people after a cochlear implant may have transient taste disorders. Taste disorder called dysgeusia may be an early complication after the implantation procedure contributing to deterioration of patients quality of life.

COVID-19 in Africa: rethinking the tools to manage future pandemics.
Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains an incurable, progressive pneumonia-like illness characterized by fever, dry cough, fatigue, and headache during its early stages. COVID-19 has ultimately resulted in mortality in at least 2 million people worldwide. Millions of people globally have already been affected by this disease, and the numbers are expected to increase, perhaps until an effective cure or vaccine is identified. ⋯ This statistic might be attributed to the low testing capacity, existing public health awareness and lessons learnt during Ebola epidemic. Nonetheless, the relatively low rate of infection should be an opportunity for Africa to be better prepared to overcome this and future epidemics. In this paper, the authors provide insights into the dynamics and transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) during the first wave of the pandemic; possible explanations into the relatively low rates of infection recorded in Africa; with recommendations for Africa to continue to fight Covid-19; and position itself to effectively manage future pandemics.

Examination of clinical conditions and chest CT images of Covid-19 cases in Turkey; single center study.
In this study, we aim to study the clinical features and chest CT findings of the patients, COVID-19 diagnosis of which are verified. ⋯ The most frequent findings in examination of pathological chest CT findings are ground glass opacity. The rate of length of intensive care unit stay and mortality is significantly higher in the patients above 65 years old compared to those below 65 years old.

Factors affecting willingness to comply with public health measures during the pandemic among sub-Sahara Africans.
The unprecedented outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) drastically spread worldwide, resulting in extraordinary measures put in place in various countries including Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) countries. ⋯ The low prevalence of mitigation practices suggest the need for targeted education campaign programs to sensitise the population.

A cohort study of the relationship between anaemia, mean corpuscular volume and mortality among a CKD population in South Africa.
The burden of chronic kidney disease is increasing globally and prompt identification, coupled with improved management of CKD patients have increased the population of pre-dialysis patients. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate the predictors of survival among pre-dialysis CKD patients in South Africa. ⋯ Mortality in pre-dialysis CKD patients was associated with anaemia and hyperphosphatemia. Clinical interventions targeted at preventing these conditions may improve outcomes among this group of CKD patients.
