Case ReportsTransition of blood glucose level in a patient with pregnancy-associated fulminant type 1 diabetes mellitus.
We report on the transition in blood glucose levels before and after the onset of fulminant type 1 diabetes mellitus in a perinatal woman. In week 38 of pregnancy, before which the patient had normal glucose tolerance, idiopathic acute pancreatitis was diagnosed. Five days thereafter, she became hypoglycemic, so we closely monitored her blood glucose levels. ⋯ Multiple insulin injection therapy was administered since the 18th day; after that, ketoacidosis did not occur. The patient was diagnosed with fulminant type 1 diabetes mellitus based on hyperglycemia without high glycated hemoglobin levels and sudden onset insulin-dependent diabetes. Monitoring glucose levels in the case of idiopathic acute pancreatitis during pregnancy and prompt initiation of insulin therapy are important.

Case ReportsEarly detection of euglycemic ketoacidosis during thoracic surgery associated with empagliflozin in a patient with type 2 diabetes: A case report.
We report the first case of intraoperatively detected euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) associated with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors during thoracic surgery. A 59-year-old man had a 12-year history of type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with insulin and empagliflozin. The patient developed bacterial empyema and was initiated with antibiotics at a local hospital. ⋯ He awoke from anesthesia normally and showed no symptoms of DKA. DKA gradually resolved over the next 24 h. Early identification and management are critical for rapid recovery from perioperative euglycemic DKA associated with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, especially during thoracic surgery.

Flash glucose monitoring in type 1 diabetes: A comparison with self-monitoring blood glucose.
A flash glucose monitoring (FGM) system has become available. To clarify the relationship between FGM and self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) values, we compared the two values after simultaneous measurement in Japanese patients with type 1 diabetes, under daily life settings. ⋯ The results of this study provided evidence on the reliability of FGM in Japanese patients with type 1 diabetes in home conditions. Based on the results, if an abnormal glucose value is detected by FGM, SBMG should then be used to confirm the result.

ReviewDoes glycemic control rescue type 2 diabetes patients from COVID-19-related deaths?
COVID-19 patients with diabetes are reported to have higher mortality compared with non-diabetic COVID-19 patients. However, recent investigations showed the importance of better glycemic control among diabetes patients to avoid death from COVID-19.
