Observational StudySymptoms of depressed mood, disturbed sleep, and sexual problems in midlife women: cross-sectional data from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.
Women report many nonvasomotor symptoms across the menopausal transition, including sleep disturbances, depressed mood, and sexual problems. The co-occurrence of these three symptoms may represent a specific menopausal symptom triad. We sought to evaluate the interrelatedness of disturbed sleep, depressed mood, and sexual problems in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) and determine the characteristics of women exhibiting this symptom triad. ⋯ The symptom triad of sleep disturbance, depressed mood, and sexual problems occurred in only 5% of women, and occurred most often among women with lower socioeconomic status, greater psychosocial distress, and who were surgically menopausal or in the late perimenopause.

Care of the transgender patient: a survey of gynecologists' current knowledge and practice.
Medical school and residency curricula are lacking in content on the care of the transgender patient. As a result, many providers do not have enough experience and knowledge to adequately care for this patient population. The aim of this study was to assess gynecologists' preferences and knowledge base with regard to transgender healthcare. ⋯ Efforts should be made to educate trainees on the important aspects of transgender care, and comprehensive guidelines should be published for practicing providers.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyEffect of aging, glucose level, and HIV viral load on response to treatment with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin in HIV/HCV co-infected women.
This was a post-hoc analysis of the Optimized Pegylated interferons Efficacy and anti-Retroviral Approach (OPERA) study, originally designed to document routine clinical and treatment data in HIV/HCV coinfected patients treated with pegylated interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV). The aim of this study was to define the impact of several variables, such as age, glucose metabolism, and HIV viral load, on PEG-IFN/RBV treatment outcomes, in HIV/HCV coinfected women. ⋯ Findings from the present study demonstrate that several factors may be predictive of SVR when pegylated interferon plus ribavirin is used (i.e., age, gender, HIV viral load and HCV genotype) that need to be carefully considered prior to therapeutic intervention, since they may hinder successful therapy. Use of PEG-IFN/RBV with novel direct antiviral agents will likely be still maintained until less expensive and effective interferon-free strategies become available.

Differences in pain subtypes between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women with chronic vulvar pain.
Compared with non-Hispanic Whites, Hispanic women have significantly higher prevalence of chronic vulvar pain (CVP), which is known to have heterogeneous subtypes. However, it is not known whether subtypes differ by ethnicity, and improved understanding of subtypes may allow for targeted clinical assessment and therapies. We examined subtypes to determine whether they differed by ethnicity. ⋯ We examined women with CVP and found that in comparison to their non-Hispanic White counterparts, Hispanic women are more likely to report a burning sensation and more likely to have primary vulvodynia, a subtype that is associated with great burden on the lives of affected women.
