Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are rare lysosomal storage disorders characterized by progressive mental retardation and motor developmental regression and myoclonic seizures. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been suggested to be used in the treatment of lysosomal disorders and brain damage caused by a deficiency of soluble lysosomal enzymes. There are no previous reports on treating NCLs with HSCT in China. ⋯ This study demonstrated that it is safe and efficacious to treat NCLs with haplo-HSCT. Transplantation should be performed at an early stage for the survival quality of pediatric patients.

The introduction of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has shown to decrease atrial fibrillation (AF)-related stroke and bleeding rates in clinical studies, but there is no certain evidence about their effects at the population level. Our aim was to assess changes in AF-related stroke and major bleeding rates between 2012 and 2019 in Andalusia (Spain), and the association between DOACs use and events rates at the population level. ⋯ In this contemporary population-based study using clinical and administrative databases in Andalusia, a significant reduction in the incidence of AF-related ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and major bleeding was observed between 2012 and 2019. The increased use of DOACs seems to be associated with this reduction.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been associated as up 40-70% of patients with extrahepatic manifestations (EHM) and 36 different syndromes. These could be attributed to the fact that HCV is lymphotropic, particularly B lymphotropic, and not merely hepatotropic, and could trigger immunological alterations indirectly by exerting a chronic stimulus on the immune system with production of immunoglobulins having rheumatoid activity forming immune complexes and production of cryoglobulins. ⋯ The mainstay of treatment of EMH has been antivirals, since interferon era to direct-acting drugs era, with no differences between the two eras, despite the better virological response. Longer evaluation of virological response and clinical investigation with longer follow-ups are necessary.

Hospital admissions and outcomes for systolic and diastolic heart failure in Spain between 2016 and 2019: A population-based study.
In Spain there is a lack of population data that specifically compare hospitalization for systolic and diastolic heart failure (HF). We assessed clinical characteristics, in-hospital mortality and 30-day cardiovascular readmission rates differentiating by HF type. ⋯ In Spain, between 2016 and 2019, hospitalization episodes for HF were mostly due to diastolic HF. According to the multilevel risk adjustment models, diastolic HF compared to systolic HF was a protective factor for both in-hospital mortality and 30-day cardiovascular readmission.
