Observational Study
[Clinical impact of introducing ventilation with high flow oxygen in the treatment of bronchiolitis in a paediatric ward].
To analyse the safety and efficacy of high-flow oxygen therapy for treatment of moderate to severe bronchiolitis in children admitted to the paediatric hospital wards. ⋯ High-flow ventilation therapy achieved a significant improvement in heart rate, respiratory rate, and scale of severity in patients with bronchiolitis. This novel therapeutic strategy allows safe management of bronchiolitis patients in the regular ward, reducing admissions to the PICU.

Little attention was paid to adolescents with Cancer in Spain up to 2010. In 2011 an "Adolescents with Cancer Committee" was established by the Spanish Society of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology (SEHOP) to care for the needs of these patients. The aim of this national survey was to outline the present situation of adolescents with cancer in Spanish Pediatric Hemato-Oncology units. ⋯ The survey shows that most adolescents with cancer in Spain between 14 and 18 years of age are treated by adult oncologists. Most pediatric institutions still do not have specific facilities and psychosocial support for adolescents. The SEHOP is working hard in order to improve the quality of cancer care, and the quality of survival of this population.

Although cerebral venous thrombosis is rare, it is more commonly associated with children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. We report the case of a 7-year-old girl who developed massive cerebral sinovenous thrombosis on day 22 of induction therapy for high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Clinical symptoms were gradual onset of headache, decreasing consciousness, and ensuing left hemiplegia. ⋯ We analysed the prothrombotic factors found in the case before and after thrombosis. We confirm the importance of early exploration of patients for clinical predisposing risk factors of thrombosis and primary prothrombotic states in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. This might help identify patients at particular risk from thrombosis and so administer thromboprophylaxis.
