Observational StudyAnalysis of possible risk predictors in patients with coronavirus disease 2019: a retrospective cohort study.
This study aimed to analyze the clinical-epidemiological profile, possible risk predictors, and outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 admitted to the ward of a tertiary care hospital in southern Brazil. Specifically, we describe the demographic characteristics, comorbidities, baseline laboratory findings, clinical course, and survival of these patients. ⋯ After analyzing the clinical and epidemiological profile, it can be concluded that age greater than 65 years and pulmonary involvement >50% are predictors of a worse prognosis for coronavirus disease 2019, as is the need for high-flow oxygen therapy. Corticotherapy, however, proved to be beneficial in the treatment of the disease.

Changes in body mass index-z scores in 3-year-old children during the COVID-19 pandemic: a 2-year retrospective cohort study.
Given how dramatically the pandemic has affected food systems, the economy, and the daily lives of children over the past 2 years, the potential impact of the pandemic on childhood obesity requires careful investigation. The aim of this study was to investigate the change in body mass index z-score in 3-year-old children and the inducing factors during the pandemic period. ⋯ This study showed an increase in body mass index z-scores in early childhood period during the COVID-19 pandemic. To prevent this increase, new strategies should be developed by considering the changes brought by the pandemic period.

Accuracy of intrapartum cardiotocography in identifying fetal acidemia by umbilical cord blood analysis in low-risk pregnancies.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of intrapartum cardiotocography in identifying fetal acidemia by umbilical cord blood analysis in low-risk pregnancies. ⋯ The three categories of intrapartum cardiotocography presented low sensitivities and high negative predictive values to identify fetal acidemia at birth in low-risk pregnancies.

Relationship between platelet indices and red cell distribution width and short-term mortality in traumatic brain injury with 30-day mortality.
This study aimed at investigating whether there is a relationship between 7- or 30-day mortality and mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, platelet count-to-total lymphocyte count ratio, or red cell distribution width in patients with traumatic brain injury. ⋯ Mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and platelet count-to-total lymphocyte count ratio values were not associated with 7- and 30-day mortality, whereas only elevated red cell distribution width was associated with 30-day mortality.

Should we reconsider high-risk features in thyroid ultrasonography?
Round shape is generally considered to reduce the risk of malignancy according to recent guidelines. On the contrary, according to some reports, spherically shaped thyroid nodules are associated with a higher risk of malignancy. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the malignancy risk of solid round isoechoic nodules detected at thyroid ultrasonography and compare it with that of solid ovoid isoechoic nodules. ⋯ We found that round nodules have higher malignancy rates than ovoid nodules. We think that ultrasonographic risk stratification systems used to target the most suitable nodules for the necessary biopsies can be dynamically updated, and sphericity can be added as a parameter in patient-based decision-making.
