An online platform for COVID-19 diagnostic screening using a machine learning algorithm.
COVID-19 has brought emerging public health emergency and new challenges. It configures a complex panorama that has been requiring a set of coordinated actions and has innovation as one of its pillars. In particular, the use of digital tools plays an important role. In this context, this study presents a screening algorithm that uses a machine learning model to assess the probability of a diagnosis of COVID-19 based on clinical data. ⋯ To the best of our knowledge, this is the first online application of its kind that presents a probabilistic assessment of COVID-19 using machine learning models exclusively based on the symptoms and clinical characteristics of users. The level of satisfaction was high. The integration of machine learning tools in telemedicine practice has great potential.

Meteorological factors affect the respiratory system, and the most important factor is the change in ambient temperature and humidity. We aimed to investigate the seasonal characteristics of patients diagnosed with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. ⋯ As a result of our study, the high rate of diagnosis and admission in the spring in cryptogenic organizing pneumonia suggested that the effect of allergens on the formation of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia should be investigated. In contrast, it should be kept in mind that cryptogenic organizing pneumonia may develop as a prolonged finding of involvement that may occur in the lung parenchyma due to lung infections and/or cold weather triggering during the winter months. In this regard, further studies can be conducted in which allergens and/or the history of infection in patients and meteorological variables are also evaluated.

Vascular endothelial growth factor gene insertion/deletion polymorphism is associated with Vitamin D level in Turkish patients with coronavirus disease 2019.
Coronavirus disease 2019 emerges as a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. It is a systemic disease associated with vascular inflammation and endothelial damage. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether vascular endothelial growth factor gene insertion/deletion polymorphism is associated with coronavirus disease 2019 in the Turkish population. ⋯ As a result of the study, we found that DD genotype and D allele were associated with vitamin D level in Turkish patients with coronavirus disease 2019.

Peak nasal inspiratory flow in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease: a case-control study.
Sickle cell disease is the most frequent of the hereditary hemoglobinopathies and it presents multisystemic effects. A manifestation that is commonly found in sickle cell disease is upper airway obstruction, particularly adenotonsillar hypertrophy. This study aims to evaluate the peak nasal inspiratory flow measurements of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease. ⋯ This study showed a high prevalence of reduced peak nasal inspiratory flow values in children with sickle cell disease and could certainly be incorporated into the day-to-day clinical evaluation of patients as a screening instrument.
