Investigation of serum phoenixin levels in patients with hypertension.
Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide. Phoenixin is a newly identified neuropeptide with multiple bioactivity. However, there was no published data about phoenixin levels in hypertension. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between phoenixin and hypertension. ⋯ Serum phoenixin-14 and phoenixin-20 may be related to the pathogenesis of hypertension. Our findings indicated that serum phoenixin-14 and phoenixin-20 may serve as a novel biomarker for the diagnosis of hypertension.

Association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D with hematological profile and anthropometry in patients with glioma.
Gliomas are immune system suppressive tumors, and the role of vitamin D is pivotal in the immune system. This study aimed to observe if there is any significant association between the serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D with hematological indices and anthropometric measurements. ⋯ Vitamin D is a powerful immune modulator, and there is a great need for sufficient amounts of sunlight exposure and vitamin D-enriched diets to prevent cancer.

Molecular mechanism of benign biliary stricture inhibition by rosiglitazone-activated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma.
The aim of this study was to investigate whether rosiglitazone-activated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma can inhibit the occurrence of benign biliary stricture and further elucidate the relevant molecular signaling mechanism. ⋯ Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma activated by rosiglitazone inhibits the transforming growth factor-beta1 -induced phosphorylation of Smad3 and the increased connective tissue growth factor expression as well as inhibits the secretion of type I collagen in biliary fibroblasts.
