Who jumps the highest? Anthropometric and physiological correlations of vertical jump in youth elite female volleyball players.
The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship of vertical jump (Abalakov jump [AJ]) with anthropometric and physiological parameters in youth elite female volleyball players. ⋯ Both the findings of the comparison among groups differing for AJ and the correlation analysis highlighted the negative role of excess body mass and fat, and the positive role of muscle strength and power on AJ. Also, there was indication that volleyball players that jumped the highest were those who matured later than others.

Clinical TrialThe effects of lumbar extensor strength on disability and mobility in patients with persistent low back pain.
It is assumed that low back pain patients who use pain-avoiding immobilizing strategies may benefit from specific back flexion and extension exercises aimed at reducing sagittal lumbar hypomobility. The aim of this study was to test this potential working mechanism in chronic low back pain patients undergoing lumbar extensor strengthening training. ⋯ Specific lumbar strengthening showed clinically relevant improvements in pain and disability in patients with persistent chronic low back pain. These improvements did not necessarily relate to improvements in lumbar mobility. Parameters representing other domains of adaptations to exercise may be needed to evaluate the effects of back pain management.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effectiveness of a range of sports bras in reducing breast displacement during treadmill running and two-step star jumping.
The primary aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of a range of sports bras in reducing multi-planar breast displacement during treadmill running and a two-step star jump. A secondary aim was to assess the relationship between perceptual bra comfort, bra fit and breast pain and measured breast displacement. ⋯ Therefore it is apparent that resultant breast movement and the reduction of such movement is a multifaceted function of breast size, bra design and movement/activity type. The variance in bra performance at different treadmill running speeds highlights this fact and indicates that sports bras should be carefully selected to best suit the activity and breast size of the user.

Is the WII fit free run activity a feasible mode of exercise for regular exercisers: a comparison with treadmill running.
This study compared the metabolic responses between treadmill running and the Free Run on the Nintendo Wii when maintaining a constant pace with an aim to see whether this would be a feasible option for exercise in persons who already exercise. ⋯ The Wii Free Run activity can be used as an additional form of exercise for persons who are already engaged in physical activity but should not be considered a replacement for treadmill running by those who run.

Incidence and factors associated with injuries among adolescent players in an amateur soccer tournament in Nigeria.
The study was conducted to determine the incidence and risk factors associated with injuries among adolescents participating in an amateur soccer tournament in Ibadan, Nigeria. ⋯ Injury incidence was relatively high although injuries were mild. Measures to minimize injuries following player-to-player contact would be beneficial for adolescent soccer players in our study setting.
