Inflammatory bowel disease and venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Essentials Risk of pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism may be increased in inflammatory bowel disease. We performed a study on inflammatory bowel disease and pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism. Inflammatory bowel disease is a risk factor for pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism. Proper disease control before conception is pivotal to avoid venous thromboembolism.

Net clinical benefit of hospitalization versus outpatient management of patients with acute pulmonary embolism.
Essentials Clinical benefit of hospitalization vs. outpatient treatment in pulmonary embolism (PE) is unknown. We performed a propensity matched cohort study of hemodynamically stable PE patients. Regardless of the risk assessment, hospitalized patients had the highest rate of adverse event. If confirmed, ambulatory care of normotensive PE patients may be preferred whenever possible.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudySafety and efficacy of BAY 94-9027, a prolonged-half-life factor VIII.
Essentials Recombinant factor VIII BAY 94-9027 conjugates in a site-specific manner with polyethylene glycol. BAY 94-9027 was given to patients with severe hemophilia A as prophylaxis and to treat bleeds. BAY 94-9027 prevented bleeds at dose intervals up to every 7 days and effectively treated bleeds. ⋯ Six hundred and thirty-six of 702 bleeds (90.6%) were controlled with ≤ 2 infusions. No patient developed a FVIII inhibitor. Conclusions BAY 94-9027 prevented bleeding across three individually tailored dose regimens and was effective for treatment of bleeds.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyBleeding risk of terminally ill patients hospitalized in palliative care units: the RHESO study.
Essentials Bleeding incidence as hemorrhagic risk factors are unknown in palliative care inpatients. We conducted a multicenter observational study (22 Palliative Care Units, 1199 patients). At three months, the cumulative incidence of clinically relevant bleeding was 9.8%. Cancer, recent bleeding, thromboprophylaxis and antiplatelet therapy were independent risk factors.

Review Meta AnalysisDesmopressin for treatment of platelet dysfunction and reversal of antiplatelet agents: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Essentials The optimal management of patients with platelet dysfunction undergoing surgery is unclear. This meta-analysis compared perioperative administration of desmopressin to placebo. Desmopressin reduced red cell transfusions, blood loss and risk of re-operation due to bleeding. There were too few events to determine if there was a change in the risk of thrombotic events.
