A Houttuynia Cordata-based Chinese herbal formula improved symptoms of allergic rhinitis during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) such as hyposmia, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, and cough are similar to those of chronic allergic rhinitis (AR). Such symptoms can easily lead AR patients to unnecessary anxiety, misdiagnosis, and invasive diagnostic tests in the COVID-19 pandemic. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an important mediator for chronic AR and plays a crucial role in the inflammation of COVID-19. Houttuynia cordata (HC) has been shown to reduce nasal congestion and swelling by suppressing the activation of IL-6 and is used to fight COVID-19. A novel HC-based Chinese herbal formula, Zheng-Yi-Fang (ZYF), was developed to test effects on nasal symptoms of patients with AR in the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ ZYF has potential effects to relieve nasal symptoms for AR during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Esophageal varices (EV) is common and is a poor prognostic factor for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the outcomes between cirrhotic and noncirrhotic HCC patients with EV is not well studied. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical manifestations and prognoses of HCC patients after surgical resection stratified by the cirrhosis status. ⋯ Compared with patients without cirrhosis, cirrhotic patients with HCC and EV are vulnerable to posthepatectomy decompensation. However, cirrhosis is not a poor prognostic factor of overall survival and recurrence for HCC patients after surgical resection.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are small (<1 cm) perivascular hemosiderin depositions. They may be visible in T2* or susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. CMBs may indicate an increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) or vascular disease. Cerebral white matter changes indicate small vessel disease (SVD), which is also related to CMBs. In cerebral vascular treatment, dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is routinely used after stenting. We surveyed our cerebral stenting case series for changes in the number of CMBs. ⋯ Preexisting CMB was a risk factor for the onset of new CMBs after stenting and DAPT. Poststenting and DAPT statistically increased CMBs in stented artery supplying territories at short-term follow-up.

The surgeon and physician's decision-making may be influenced by many factors. The clinical practice guideline suggested that watchful waiting for 3 months should be the initial management for pediatric otitis media with effusion. The waiting time of ventilation tube insertion for pediatric patients is a proper measurement for physician decision-making. This study investigated factors influencing the waiting time for pediatric ventilation tube insertion and to explore factors influencing physician decision-making. ⋯ The waiting time of ventilation tube insertions for pediatric otitis media with effusion can be influenced by many factors. Patients with older age and undergone simultaneously bilateral ventilation tube insertion had shorter waiting time. Patients who had more upper respiratory tract infection episodes and who received ventilation tube insertions in a tertiary referral center setting were subject to longer waiting times.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is characterized by bladder pain accompanied by irritative urinary symptoms, and typical cystoscopic and histological features. In this pilot study, we assessed the impact of lesion-targeted bladder injection therapy using a biocellular regenerative medicine on patients with refractory IC/BPS. The medicine, which was an autologous emulsified fat (Nanofat) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combination, was prepared intraoperatively. ⋯ The cultured mesenchymal stem cells from Nanofat samples of the six patients were verified in vitro. Our preliminary results suggest novel intravesical therapy with autologous Nanofat plus PRP grafting is safe and effective for refractory IC/BPS. Surgical efficacy might be attributed to an in vivo tissue engineering process.
