Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a type of malignancy characterized by high relapse and recurrence rates in the late stage despite optimal surgical intervention and postoperative chemoradiotherapy. Because the management of relapse following definitive treatment is challenging, accurate risk stratification is of clinical significance to improve treatment outcomes. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are noncoding RNAs featured with cell-type specificity and high stability, owing to their circular structure, making these molecules excellent biomarkers for a variety of diseases. ⋯ Our study demonstrated the potential of biomarkers in plasma to inform not just the tumor but the entire oral cavity, thereby offering a prediction for early recurrence and second primary OSCC. The plasma circRNAs remain valuable for OSCC, albeit the easy accessibility to the oral cavity.

Liver cirrhosis is characterized by liver fibrosis and pathological angiogenesis, which results in hyperdynamic circulation, portal-systemic collateral vascular formation, and abnormal angiogenesis. Lycopene is a nutrient mostly found in tomatoes. The beneficial effects of lycopene include anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-fibrosis, and anti-angiogenesis; however, the association between liver cirrhosis and pathological angiogenesis has yet to be studied. This study aimed to investigate the effects of lycopene on biliary cirrhotic rats. ⋯ Lycopene ameliorated liver fibrosis, hyperdynamic circulation, and pathological angiogenesis in biliary cirrhotic rats, possibly through the modulation of intrahepatic Akt/PI3K/eNOS and VEGFR-2 pathways.

Calcimimetics is a new drug for lowering serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium and phosphate in patients with hyperparathyroidism (HPT) on long-term dialysis. It became available on market in 2006. The impact of calcimimetics on the treatment by parathyroidectomy (PTx) was reviewed from the surgeons' point of view. ⋯ A consensus between nephrologists and surgeons about propitious timing for PTx is necessary. Future prospect on the surgical treatment of renal HPT is proposed. Supplemental figure; http://links.lww.com/ASAIO/A782.

Whether hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can affect the outcomes of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and outcomes of DILI in Taiwan, with an emphasis on the impact of HBV infection. ⋯ Antituberculosis agents were the leading cause of DILI in Taiwanese, and they were associated with poorer outcomes than other drug categories. Active HBV infection, ATDILI and ALBI score were independent risk factors for fatal DILI. Close monitoring of liver tests and timely antiviral therapy should be implemented in HBV carriers during the administration of high-risk drugs, such as antituberculosis agents.

Over the past decades, the treatment of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been redefined with the incorporation of evidence from multiple clinical trials. Recommendations from guidelines are updated regularly to reduce morbidity and mortality. However, heterogeneous care systems, physician perspectives, and patient behavior still lead to a disparity between evidence and clinical practice. ⋯ Comprehension of every aspect of quality assessment and indicators might be too demanding for a physician. However, it is worthwhile to understand the concepts involved in quality improvement since every physician wants to provide better care for their patients. This article reviews a fundamental approach to quality care in STEMI.
