Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a sight-threatening condition that needs regular examinations and remedies. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the most common used examination to evaluate the structure and thickness of the macula, but the software in the OCT machine does not tell the clinicians whether DME exists directly. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to aid in diagnosis generation and therapy selection. We thus develop a smartphone-based offline AI system that provides diagnostic suggestions and medical strategies through analyzing OCT images from diabetic patients at the risk of developing DME. ⋯ We successful integrated an AI model into the mobile device to provide an offline method to provide the diagnosis for quickly screening the risk of developing DME. With the offline property, our model could help those nonophthalmological healthcare providers in offshore islands or underdeveloped countries.

Sialic acids (SIAs), for example, α2,6-SIAs, can link to conserved N-glycans of immunoglobulin G (IgG). In this study, we investigated the correlation between α2,6-SIA on IgG and IgM and the disease activity of arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in mice. ⋯ Concurrent reverse expression of α2,6-SIA ratios on IgM and IgG correlated with the occurrence of CIA and RA disease activity. Thus, α2,6-SIA ratios on IgG-anti-CCP antibodies and IgMRF are potential markers for evaluating RA disease activities.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is widely used in intensive care units because it provides timely information noninvasively. The use of LUS is recommended to minimize transfers in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during the pandemic. The clinical efficacies of bedside chest X-ray (CXR) and LUS have not been compared in these patients. ⋯ The LUS findings were more sensitive than those of the CXR in detecting re-expansion of the lungs by showing B-lines instead of consolidations in the BLL fields immediately after recruitment maneuver (RM). Compared with physiological parameters, LUS findings provided more precise information about the parts of the lungs that had been recruited by RM. Therefore, we encourage intensivists to extend their use of LUS in critically ill patients with COVID-19 and ARDS to acquire real-time information for a quick response and minimize the risk of viral transmission.
