Although cardiovascular oxidative stress is examined in type 2 diabetes, there is relatively limited number of reports about the effect of pioglitazone, an insulin sensitizer, on cardiovascular oxidative stress in sucrose diet-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS). As a regulator of cardiovascular homeostasis, thioredoxin (TRX) has an important role in defense against oxidative stress in cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of pioglitazone on oxidative stress markers and TRX1 level in tissues of both heart and aorta from MetS rats. ⋯ Pioglitazone treatment significantly increased TRX1 protein level in heart and aorta tissues in MetS group. Pioglitazone affected the TRX1 protein level via regulation of reactive oxygen intermediates. Pioglitazone reduced the elevated oxidative stress in heart and aorta of MetS rats.

Since Taiwan's national health insurance system provides residents with easy and affordable access to clinical acupuncture treatment, this study sought to analyze trends in the publication of acupuncture-related research in Taiwan from 1988 to 2017, using a bibliometric method. ⋯ The China Medical University in Taichung, Taiwan, was the most active educational institution in Taiwan in terms of acupuncture-related research. Professor Lin Jaung-Geng was the leading acupuncture-related researcher, having the most publications, citations, and the highest h-index value. These results provided a context for analyzing the strengths of the existing research and informing prospective strategies for further studies.

Some patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms hesitate to undergo surgical treatment until acute urinary retention (AUR) occurs. Some of these patients have been found to have hydronephrosis or even renal insufficiency. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for hydronephrosis in patients with AUR who needed to receive transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). ⋯ IPP was a significant risk factor for hydronephrosis in BPH patients. If the patients' IPP exceeded 1.95 cm, they had a higher risk of having hydronephrosis when AUR occurred. Hydronephrosis is a risk factor for renal insufficiency, and Serum Cr levels decreased significantly in the patients of our study.

Missed appointments mean appointments neither attended nor canceled by patients. Missed appointments belong to one of the important subjects of hospital management because they would incur the inactivity of medical professionals and devices, occupy the health resources for other patients, and thus impair the quality of healthcare services. The aim of this study was to explore the factors of missed appointments at the outpatient department of an academic medical center in Taiwan. ⋯ The factors of missed appointments were multifaceted. Further measures could be undertaken accordingly to enhance healthcare efficiency.

Taiwan's NHI Administration proposed a nationwide postacute care-cerebral vascular disease (PAC-CVD) program, which transfers stroke patients at postacute phase in medical centers to community hospitals. Its aim is mainly to prevent a prolonged stay in medical centers, which usually results in higher medical costs. The present study evaluated the 3-months functional outcomes of stroke patients receiving PAC-CVD. ⋯ About one-third of patients with mRS 3 to 4 recovered well in 3-months after stroke in both PAC-CVD and regular rehabilitation groups. Our results showed that PAC-CVD program can significantly decrease functional decline after acute stroke.
