In the general population, prostate adenocarcinoma affects predominately older men. If fact, most current guidelines suggest that males over the age of 50 years should undergo prostate cancer screening. However, the clinical behavior and prognosis of prostate cancer in young adults is not well defined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical behavior, pathological characteristics, and prognosis of prostate cancer in young adults. ⋯ The result of our investigation indicated that prostate adenocarcinoma patients younger than 50 years had similar histological grade, disease stage, PSA level, overall survival, and biochemical-free survival as the older population. However, patients younger than 50 years with prostate cancer less frequently showed initial symptoms of LUTS.

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a hereditary ocular disorder characterized by a failure of peripheral retinal vascularization. In this report, we describe a novel missense mutation of the Norrie disease gene (NDP) in a Chinese family with X-linked FEVR. Ophthalmologic evaluation was performed on four male patients and seven unaffected individuals after informed consent was obtained. ⋯ The mutation c.310A>C (p. Lys104Gln) in exon 3 of NDP is associated with FEVR in the studied family. This result further enriches the mutation spectrum of FEVR.

High myopia is associated with multiple ocular morbidities that may lead to irreversible blindness. Because high myopia in an adult is thought to be related to onset of myopia in very early childhood, detecting myopia early and working to improve modifiable risk factors may help reduce the development of high myopia. In this study, we tried to evaluate the prevalence of myopia and associated risk factors in second-grade primary school children in Taipei, Taiwan. ⋯ Our findings indicate that lifestyle and reading habits impact the development of myopia during early childhood. Behavior modification, such as more time spent outside during the day and limited near-work activity, may be a feasible strategy for curbing the increasingly high prevalence of myopia in Taipei.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] on podocytes and the mitochondrial signaling pathway in a high-glucose (HG) environment. ⋯ Ang-(1-7) inhibited mitochondrial fission in HG-induced podocytes by upregulation of miR-30a and downregulation of Drp1 and p53.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Efficacy and safety of ticagrelor versus clopidogrel in acute coronary syndrome in Taiwan: A multicenter retrospective pilot study.
The efficacy and safety of ticagrelor compared with clopidogrel in acute coronary syndrome has not previously been evaluated in an Eastern Asian population, which is recognized to have a different response to P2Y12 antagonists compared with the Caucasian population in real-life situations. ⋯ Ticagrelor treatment could provide a marginally favorable effect at the expense of an increased risk of dyspnea in real-life situations. This pilot study provides a scientific basis to call for a larger, suitably powered Phase 4 prospective or observational study in this ethnic population.
