Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the most commonly used serologic test for Helicobacter pylori. This study aimed to investigate the effects of age and atrophic gastritis on the diagnostic accuracy of an immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody test against H. pylori in adults. ⋯ The quantitative ELISA test is a good noninvasive test even in older age groups and is a suitable test in patients with atrophic gastritis due to its excellent sensitivity.

The clinical course of methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) is fulminant in neonates and emergency management is necessary to save lives. It is therefore very important to differentiate affected from unaffected neonates immediately when there are abnormal results regarding MMA in newborn screening. ⋯ Referred newborns with elevated plasma C3/C2 ratios > 0.4 or ammonia levels > 200 mg/dL should be highly suspected of having MMA.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a widely used, highly effective method of birth control. Uterine perforation is a rare yet serious complication and is usually seen during insertion of the IUD. ⋯ The diagnosis was made during routine gynecological examination, and the patient was treated in a timely manner before any complications such as ectopic pregnancy, intrauterine pregnancy, infection or irreversible harm to the cervix arose. This case stresses the importance of regular visits to maintain health and diagnose possible adverse effects of intrauterine contraceptive methods.

Distal marginal stenosis is rarely reported to be a factor associated with poor long-term patency of patients of head and neck cancers with carotid blowout syndrome treated with stent grafts. We report a case of laryngeal cancer with rupture of the right common carotid artery. A self-expandable stent graft was deployed, but bleeding recurred. ⋯ We performed direct percutaneous puncture of the proximal superior thyroid artery for successful embolization. Distal marginal stenosis and asymptomatic thrombosis of the carotid artery were noted at 3.5- and 5-month follow-ups, respectively. We suggest aggressive early follow-up and reintervention for distal marginal stenosis by combined antibiotic therapy and angioplasty and stenting to improve the long-term patency of stent-graft deployment for management of carotid blowout syndrome.
